This site and it's content will no longer be updated (as you may have gathered) since I am now too busy with other activities.

DieselTekk has been a joy, however as my priorities have changed a great deal over the past couple of years I can no longer contribute towards this site.

It's content will remain for the next year, after which it shall be removed.

These days my blogging efforts can be found at MyEarBooks, a blog dedicated to podiobook and audiobook reviews, news and author interviews.  It has been live since 1st November 2011 and has already grabbed the attention of many, having over 1000 visitors from all over the world within the first month.
Interviews with authors such as Bill Schmalfeldt, Larime Taylor and Greg Crites who have each talked about podcast novels that I have reviewed are live on the site for all to read and comment on.

#Apple to Replace Tabletop Product Signage With #iPads - Seriously?

So according to this article on Mac Format's blog, Apple have decided that normal  traditional tabletop signs (indicating features, prices etc) are not good enough and as such replaced them with iPads running a custom app.

Are these guys serious?  While some of us sit around looking at the iPad, lusting and trying hard to justify purchasing one, Apple are using the damned things to display a price!

Graham Barlow of Mac Format has this to say on the matter...

"It’s a great idea, and really promotes the iPad as a business tool."

NO IT'S NOT Graham!  It's wasteful and just goes to show how over-inflated the price of the iPad really is.

In my shop tabletop signage costs me roughly £5 at most.  An iPad starts at just £399 at the Apple UK store.  Thats a difference of £394.  So Apple can justify the difference because this method effectively demonstrates an alternative use for the iPad?

Come on guys, stop showing off!

 

iPhone 5 Prediction and Speculation

iPhones are the hot topic everywhere, all of the time.

I love my iPhone 3GS (8GB) and I would love to get hold of an iPhone 4 but alas saving for my wedding is far more important (says my fiance!).

However no blog about technology would be holding it's head above water without at least one article about this upcoming new release from Apple.

The iPhone 5, (which could also be the branded as the iPhone 4G or iPhone 4GS) will most likely be released in September, when Apple usually refreshes it's iPod line up.  Why they would break this cycle I do not know, so it's a pretty same assumption that September is when we can expect to see the new iPhone.

Each new iPhone is the past has been thinner, lighter and faster, so another safe prediction would be that the new iPhone will follow this trend making it even more desirable that previous Apple offerings.

Goodbye Antennagate!  The embarrasment caused by the iPhone 4's antenna issues will be a thing of the past with the release of the iPhone 5.  This is perhaps the safest prediction of all.  Aliens could land on planet Earth after travelling hundreds of thousands of lightyears to get here and be completely baffled by the iPhone's newest antenna technology!

The camera of the iPhone 5 will be better.  With the majority of new, high-end smartphones being released to day having a camera rated at around 8 megapixels it is safe to predict that the iPhone 5's camera will be on par with these, with the good old Apple twist (it'll somehow be better than other camera's with the same functionality, megapixel count, physical size etc... that's how Apple does things!).

It will be black (or white).  Personally I would like a yellow option too.

Speaking speculatively I believe that the iPhone 5 will (finally) sync wirelessly with iTunes.  We have asked for this feaute for long enough now and I believe that Apple will have taken this into account with the iPhone 5.  I am also expecting a great deal of fuss to be made with regards to interacting with 'the cloud' (iCloud?) which will likely enable Apple authorised and hosted streaming of content via it's MobileMe (or iCloud) service.
Widgets, which although I doubt will be available on iPhone 5, or any other iPod product, are something that I would love to see available within iOS.  Despite being a bit of an Apple fanboy, I do get some Android-envy when I see my missus playing with her widgets (ahem)!

#NowPlaying - Complete with #Hashtags @NCBRadio

For those interested I have decided that from this point on I shall be formatting my post titles so that they are more useful within the Twitterverse.  That possibly means '@'s and #hashtags all over the place but it should help with advertising my posts within that medium.

Anyway, moving along I wanted to make mention of my new daily listening habits.

It used to be that I would listen to music on my iPhone, either through the music I have downloaded to it, or via Spotify.  Both of which are excellent sources, but offer less variety even when played 'on random'.

I want my music to be played to me, I don't want to make decisions about what I listen to nor do I want the ability to skip through songs I don't want to listen to at that time.  I t may seem backward, but when I have these facilities available while at work or at home, then the music is distracting.

The obvious choice then is the radio.

However the radio has drawbacks too.  I cannot stand local radio stations, they bore me.  They are not for me; instead they are aimed at a particular listening demographic of which I do not think I necessarily belong.

Ad after ad after ad, some trying to be funny, some with the most annoying jingles that get stuck in my head like a migraine... again, distractions.

As for national radio, well the only one I can find that plays the kind of music I want to listen to is BBC Radio 1, which plays the same songs over and over, show after show, day through night, through day again.  Repetition is boring and again, distracting.

Lately I find myself listening to NCBRadio, a small, non-profit, enthusiast created and led broadcast available to all and any via the internet.

The music is not always necessarily to my taste, the few ad's (even the one for my Company, Evolve) can get annoying, but it's easy to listen to and for that I am grateful.

Songs are rarely repeated, the ad's (although repeated) are quite few and far between and I can safely broadcast it in my shop without fear of controversial language upsetting my customers.

Give them a listen, NCBRadio may not be to your taste but it's always worth trying something new!

In reply to OllieColeshill.co.uk – E Safety

I spotted an article at OllieColeshill.co.uk today entitles E Safety and it got me thinking.

A few years ago, my son who had his own (shared with his younger brother) email address had signed up to a few of the children's internet gaming networks, such as Club Penguin et al.

His Mother and I would occasionally check his email inbox for any nastiest such as ad’s for Viagra and explicit XXX websites, however one day his Mother came across a conversation thread B had been involved in which was obviously not suitable for him.

It was quite scary, since he was being ‘groomed’ by somebody who obviously intended to harm him, either physically or mentally – it really frightened us as parents, and since then he no longer has access to an email address and only accesses websites that have been vetted by us beforehand.  B is 10 now, he was just 8 years old then.

Recently I have been considering creating on his behalf a Facebook account, since his family is spread far and wide, with some living in Essex, others as far as Scotland.  Since he is almost 11 years old I considered that he is at a point of maturity that would allow him the common sense to act responsibly within the confines of a community such as Facebook, since pretty much every step he could make on FB is open for all his ‘friends’ to see, especially the people he adds as a friend.

However, OllieColeshill’s article got me thinking when he writes

“On Facebook and Twitter you can protect your information or statuses/tweets so that people your not friends with or who you have giving permission to follow you can see your information or what you have been writing.”

This is true; as his parent I can lock down aspects of Facebook so that only those I consider acceptable can see his activities on Facebook, however have you noticed what king of a minefield Mark Zuckerberg has created with the Facebook Privacy Options?  They are a nightmare.

There are many places that try to simplify the Privacy Options, and explain there different aspects:

• All Facebook – 10 Privacy Settings Every Facebook User Should Know

The simple fact that there are so many articles online about all the different (and ever changing) security settings, and attempts to make them easier to understand just goes to show how much of a tangled web these settings are.

With that in mind I have come to the conclusion that B is not old, wise or mature enough to hold a Facebook account… not until he can comprehend the dangers – and the controls available to protect him from the dangers – of using a website that is supposed to bring friends and family closer together.

To that end, I don’t think anybody is old, wise or mature enough for Facebook because frankly, nobody understands how to play with the privacy controls effectively!

As a footnote I would like to say one last thing, B is 10 years old and just a little over one month from his eleventh birthday.  I know he is technically not old enough to hold a Facebook account until he is 13 due to the other minefield that is the Facebook Terms & Conditions of Use, but then again, who understand that 3759 word-load if legalese?

Site changes coming

As frequent visitors will definitely have noticed, and as occasional visitors may have noticed, DieselTekk has not been updated for sometime, despite many promises that it will be.

Well, there is a reason for this, and it is for you, the reader, to decide whether my reasons are good or not.

I have recently started my own retail business, Evolve.  A computer retail and repair shop in my local town of Bodmin in Cornwall.
This has taken a great deal of planning and above all, TIME.  Time used to build Evolve, and to do the work it brings forth has meant little time for writing for this site.

Now that things have settled a little at Evolve I plan to resurrect DieselTekk and to take it in a slightly different direction.
DieselTekk will continue to be focussed on making computing a little simpler, while still offering product reviews and so forth, however it will offer some new content also.

I have other blogs too, these include the Single Sentence Review, a site I created to review products in a single sentence, and to encourage others to contribute to the reviews in the comments with their own opinions.  Single Sentence Review is a new site and therefore requires some traffic to get it off the ground (please link it).

The Learning Curve Is Steep is my personal blog, a diary of thoughts and so forth.  It has been quite personal up until now, with only a few of my close friends knowing about it.  However since I am not only into blogging for the fun, but also to make a few pennies from the ad’s on my sites, this one also deserves some traffic.  So, if you are at all interested in the musings of a (nearly) 30 year old Cornish guy with a very topsy-turvy life, then please read (and link) on.

Of course there is also Evolve.  The website at www.evolveyourpc.co.uk is something the company is very proud of, designed by my good friend and colleague Andrew, who has unfortunately fallen ill recently. As such I am unable to ask him to update the site frequently, and since a lot of the content is hand craft at time of posting I cannot reproduce the content easily.  So, in Andrew’s absence I have created evolvebodmin.blogspot.com which shall soon have the evolveyourpc address redirected to it, along with all it’s current traffic.

My intention is to bring an aspect or two from each of these other sites into DieselTekk, and also to direct DieselTekk visitors to articles on these new sites, all of which may be of interest to my readers.

Along with this new approach I shall be looking at a new template design for DieselTekk, something a little more clear and easier to navigate easily, so please check back often to stay on top of all the changes.

Now, as a footnote I would like to mention North Cornwall’s BC Radio.
North Cornwall’s BC Radio consists of a small, tight crew of young broadcast enthusiasts from the Bodmin area.  They have started their own internet based community radio station, and are fast developing a following in the North Cornwall area thanks to their fun narratives and excellent playlist choices.  Of course, they are also sponsored by Evolve!

Jolicloud is Bad

Jolicloud “…so bad you can’t use it”

I was looking at the homepage of Jolicloud, the latest Linux operating system aimed squarely at the netbook market, and the closest offering to the eagerly anticipated Google Chrome OS currently out in the web.

Microsoft Windows Vista Service Pack 2 (SP2) Now Available

Microsoft makes Service Pack 2 for Windows Vista available for download – links below!

The update does not provide any performance increase, but does however roll-up all patches since SP1.

So, if you are planning to reinstall Vista on your PC or notebook it would be a good idea to go along and grab this latest Service Pack, as well as Service Pack 1 and store them on a flash drive, then, once you have reinstalled Vista you can quickly bring it up to date without having to run Microsoft Update over and over!

St Austell’s new LAN Party group’s website and forums open their doors!

I have been working on a new project of late, SanOzzelLAN.co.uk, in conjunction with an old friend, Terry aka Cubedout (I don’t know what this handle means, but I’m sure it means something to him at least!).

SanOzzelLAN.co.uk is the website for our new LAN Party group, and we plan to hold our first event at the beginning of July this year. 

We will be playing a hole host of games, around 20 in all, over the 24 hours the event will run, and am trying to get local businesses involved as sponsors for the event – to donate prizes and/or a little financial backing (it’s not a cheap thing to do).

Looking For Linux, Finding Nothing Here

I have just been having a look around the web for some information on Linux, nothing in particular, I guess I was just a little bored.
I was surfing the blogs and came across Another Day Wasted by accident, and noticed the header which displayed a nice little avatar of Tux, the Linux penguin, and the faded background of Linux and some commands.
Showing promise, I started looking through the latest articles (9 on the first page) there is not a single piece of Linux info.  There were some links in the sidebar, but the information there was little.
For a blog that bills itself straight from the off as a Linux site, based on the misleading header, it is unfortunate to find such little Linux related info.
However, the site still makes a fun read, as the author likes to rant and moan about, well, anything really.  There are also a couple of articles regarding movies that I noticed, such as Repo! and Watchmen, and for those two I left a comment.
I hope that the author of Another Day Wasted works hard to put in some decent Linux coverage, as the blog design is fantastic, the layout is simple, and the colour scheme works perfectly, it just needs the content to match the header image used – either that, or change the header to reflect the content that is already in place!

Pornography! How Do You Detect It?

Today I was contacted by an old workmate through Facebook, we had a quick chat and that was it.

I then got to thinking about him, and remembered how one day while he was away from his desk, a series of pornographic images were displayed on his work laptop’s screen.

He obviously got into a great deal of trouble for this, but his reason was sincere.  He had saved some images from the internet on one of his (many) USB flash drives while using his own PC at home, and that day at work he plugged in the flash drive into his work laptop,forgetting the images were there.  He left the drive plugged in when he went to lunch, and his computer picked up the images and used them as a screensaver.  Oops!

Pornography on business or education computers is bad news though, there is the potential for huge financial losses for the company, as well as a massive loss of productivity and employee enthusiasm all due to lengthy investigations, lay-off’s, and lawsuits. 

I started looking in to this online, and came across a product, use by the likes of the US Army, the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security.  The product (software) is SurfRecon ERT (Emergency Response Tool)and it uses some pretty advanced algorithms to detect pornographic images, preventing the requirement for an employer to request another member of staff to investigate an employees computer for possibly pornographic images (which could apparently result in sexual harassment lawsuits!).  SurfRecon ERT can then generate a report on any evidence found.

It’s a pretty interesting tool, and worth investigating further, as such I have downloaded an evaluation copy to try out at home… I will report my findings in a follow up article at some point.

SurfRecon ERT (available for Windows, Mac and Linux operating systems) has the potential to remove the risk of a hostile work environment and to reduce costs to employers, and for this I wish the SurfRecon the best of luck with their product.

Holodomor

I’ll be clear on this right from the outset – this is in no way tekk related, nor is it the kind of article you would expect to find on this site.

I was just perusing the internet and came across a topic that has never caught my attention before, since world issues are not something that I can profess to having a great deal of interest in, after all, I have more than enough issues at home, with my family and in my community as it is, however I found this website interesting.

Holodomor Truth is a website publicising unbiased facts concerning the Golodomor (mass hunger/famine) in the Soviet Union between 1932 and 1933, during which an estimated 6-6 MILLION peasants died of hunger.

It’s amazing to think, in my opinion at least, that even during the last 100 years a modern, developed society such as the Soviet Union could be hit so hard by famine.

I believe that people the world over should read the information on this webpage.  It is well presented and easy to understand.  If you take a look, and have an opinion on he atrocity, please come back here and leave your comments.  I am interested to read your opinion.

ThePirateBay.org’s Ship Is Sinking! - Updated

ThePirateBay is down, the ship is sinking.

Apparently due to a Denial Of Service (DoS) attack, and as reported at Sys-Con Media it could also be a hijacked botnet causing all of the fuss! 

Fun Fun Fun!

So, it appears that everyone’s favourite filesharing ship is sinking!

I checked this morning and ThePirateBay seems to be back online, I guess it didn’t last too long after all!

How I’ve Managed Without Broadband At Home

As I have detailed in previous articles of late, I have been temporarily without an internet connection at home for the last couple of months.

Keeping this, and my other blog (Our5Kids), up to date has been difficult.  As such I decided to instead concentrate my efforts on DieselTekk and allow Our5Kids to fall by the wayside – something I feel incredibly guilty over since Our5Kids keeps many family members and friends up to date with what is happening in our children's lives.

Anyhow, this is a short story about how I have managed to maintain some semblance of internet normality while by internet connection at home has been disrupted.

1.  The Mobile Phone

Not the best or cheapest method of keeping up to date online, but it worked for a while.  I have a network contract with ‘3’, who I thought were quite reasonable with their charges.  It wasn’t until I found out that I had ”reached [my] credit limit” that I noticed that internet usage charges amounted to an excess of £70 for just a couple of weeks use that I realised I was wrong.

In future I will keep a closer eye on this, as it appears email access, Facebook and Windows Live Messenger is free, whereas Skype, and the rest of the internet is not.  Strangely, a friend who has the same monthly contract as myself – but has a different mobile phone – pays nothing for Skype, in fact it’s encouraged by ‘3; that he use Skype on his handset!

2.  The Coffee Shop with Free Internet Access

There is a stunning coffee shop in my town called Tengo! which offers free WiFi internet access to all it’s customers (and those camped outside on the street or on the roadside huddled in their cars!).  The download speed seems quite quick, in line with the rest of the town centre at around 4-6Mbits/sec, and allows me to use my Aspire One netbook without issue.

It is an open connection though, with no WEP key for access or and kind of security, so does carry a little worry.  I don’t have a great deal on my netbook that requires me to worry a great deal about security, however my emails and contacts etc are all held in an Outlook PST file.  So should some unscrupulous fool manage to snoop within my system, he could potentially grab a great deal of my personal info in one fell swoop.

Using Windows 7, with it’s enhanced security, and ZoneAlarm (albeit the free version) installed helps prevent this kind of action, but you never really know who is on the snoop!

The other downside to using an internet cafe,is cost.  The internet access may be free in Tengo!, but you have to be a customer which does mean you have to actually buy something!  For an hour of use I will go through at least two regular cappuccino’s, and at £1.50 each it may be only £3.00 but I have a lot to do online in a single session, so 2 hours would cost me £6.00 plus a great deal of time on the loo.

3.  Another House

I have also been using the internet at the mother-in-law’s house, which is a little slower than I am used to, but more than adequate for what I need.  The benefits are clear – free drinks, free food etc, but the downside is that I have to talk which means if I am there for an hour, I will get maybe 33% done of what I need to get done.  Not so good.

The same would be the case no matter who’s house I was to go to, another family member or a friend.  Ah well, it’s still free though!

So there you have it, the three main ways I have been getting online over the last couple of months.  Not so easy as opening my laptop in my home, in switching on my main PC, but it’s helped.

The Trouble With Broadband

BT are rubbish, Sky are better!

After a two month battle with British Telecom I have finally managed to get my telephone line reconnected. 

However, I then found an additional problem in that Sky, who supply my broadband internet connection had been cancelled due to inactivity!

I spent a couple of hours yesterday on the phone to the cheerful people at Sky who initially told me that they would have to charge me a £75 connection fee as a new account would have to be opened!  Now, the thing is, I have already paid £75 to get connected the first time around, and did not see why I should have to foot the bill for BT’s mistake… and after being referred to several different departments one extremely helpful lady in the cancellations department sorted out everything for me.

The £75 fee was waived and my broadband connection should be active once again in a week or two.  that’s good, because the cost of using the internet via my mobile phone means that I now own nearly £100 on that bill, and accessing the internet via Tengo! (a cafe in St Austell with free WiFi access) is all well and good, but I don’t think I could manage to many more cappuccino's just to access my emails!

So this means that within the next one or two weeks updates to this site should once again be coming thick and fast, but for now please be patient… there are plenty of older articles for you to look over and comment on so please feel free to look around.

DieselTekk Services – Optimise IT

Since I was smacked with the redundancy stick last Friday I have had to take a look at how I am going to keep my family with food in their stomachs.

So, after years of learning and gaining experience I am now offering my knowledge and time to people in my local area in need of help with their computer systems.

Yesterday I walked around dropping 100 leaflets through the doors of homes in my immediate area, in a day or two I will do 100 more.  The leaflets are double sided, one side promoting this website, and telling a little of what I do and can offer, the other side is a service promotion “Optimise IT”.

These days everybody is feeling the pinch financially, but nevertheless computers still cause users trouble, thus creating a thought in the owners minds that it’s time to replace their slow PC with something new.  However many people just do not realise that the slow down is normal, and all that is required is a little technical know-how and time to gain back a bit of that speed, thus ensuring their computer can carry on for a bit longer before needing to be replaced.
